M-16 is obsolete!

Ok so all the big weapons systems get highlighted a lot but what about the everyday weapons.

The M16 is old, out dated and a shit poor performer. Get some dirt in it and the damn thing jams and you have to spend an hour cleaning it so it will work right again.

Israel has started replacing it with the TAVOR. All the mechanics
are located in the back of the weapon giving it a much shorter profile
making it better for urban house to house fighting that is encountered
more and more these days.

The US is in development of the OICW. Designed to be the Swiss Army knife of assault rifles. I'm really worried.

The OICW will have most all the same firing rates and effective range as the M-16 but will have a 20mm grenade laucher with a laser range finder on it. The laser range finder will be able to determine the range of a target say behind a mound of dirt or maybe a thin skinned building set the a on the grenade so it will explode over the concealed target or just after it pierces the wall.

But it still uses the same basic weapon design of the M-16 and is a behemoth of a weapon. Does not provide a good urban fighting weapon. Weighing in at a wopping 12 lbs it will not be hailed as the best weapon ever by most service members when they have to walk around with the thing all day!

Other than the special 20mm grenade launcher this weapon does not provide the necessary elements to combat the next generation of threats.

I still think, though, for motorized infantry, or say, my jeep, I'd like the OICW.

The OICW looks like the "Pulse Rifle" from the movie "Aliens".

And that's about as much good as I can think to say about it.

Shit a Slingshot is better than the M-16, I got my first one in the Marine Corp in 71 smashed the shit out of it and got me a AK not sure why the US never adopted the AK.

National pride... I shot a newer AR-15 my boss had. I didn't find it too bad of a gun, but then again I'm not too experienced with rifles... I've shot a crapload of handguns though. I did find it kind of hard to aim with the thing compared to by boss' HK.

I know what the OICW looks like now! A classic toy from the 60's that I used as a little kid in the 80's. A plastic toy supergun to beat all others. The "Johnny Seven OMA" (One-Man Army).

It made for a very bulky, heavy toy. But it made me the King of the Hill. I don't think that concept of the rifle as multi-tool works well for real life battlefield conditions, however.

Far from it.

there is nothing special about the tavor. they have been making bull pup styled assult rifles for quite some time. This one is chambered in 5.56 nato which is a pussy round.

the oicw looks god aweful, heavy and complicated. It is the complications of the system which are the failings of hte m16. Looks like they have not learned their lesson. keep it simple stupid.

the M16 is definately past it's useful life.

After having just carried one around for the last six months, I can vouch for how useless they are in a vehicle. The M4 would have been a better solution...

They have cooler stuff out there, Guns that shoot around corners, I still think that the P90 is prolly the best for house to house. And all the extra stuffthey have (laserz etc) can be made for almost any gun, if nothing else, Duct Tape

P90 only has an effective range of 200 meters...

The TAVOR is a very nice design. The other one, well, kind of looks like a joke.
