Heres my situation, im 20 attending college and using a job as a bartender/server to pay my way though. Its great money and overall i wouldnt change it.
This applys to most chain restraunts.
I realize there are bad servers, but give everyone a chance.
Things people dont/wont/will never realize.

1. Your refills are comming, shut up. ~ asking me 10 times for your refills means somthing. You dont have eyes, you apperently havent noticed me attending to others and probably havent noticed that i havent made that one trip back to the kitchen just for you yet. More than likley im busy, you can wait 3 minutes. If i am refilling somone from your partys glass while holding two pitchers, the odds are you are getting another. dont ask.

2. Go to your assigned seat. ~ ok, so a restraunt pays someone about 9$ an hour to seat you. This person is called a host, their job is incredibly simple and easy. They pick a table for you for a reason, maybe its so people arent traveling an extra 80 paces to attend to you & your window seat. The first thing that comes to mind when somone makes a request off of the bat is needy, when i write somone off as needy, they become my most neglected table. Not cause i cant keep up, but because i dont care for them.

3. Its called a menu. ~ If you dont see somthing called create your own meal and then complain about the prices, dont order it. If you cant find somthing you can live with on our 70+ choice menu, i suggest you leave and go cook yourself that meal. One or sometimes even two alterations whatever, no big deal.

4. We are people too. ~ ok some of us arent, dead beats ect ect. I don know about the rest of you but I usually respond to a "how are you guys doing?" with "what do you have on tap?" Its not a 100% forced line, atleast respond with a ok. i dont care if you ask back.

5. We dont have all day ~ if you think we enjoy waiting around for you to get off yourself phone your wrong. say "hold on for 20 seconds" order and get back to it, i have things to do, i'm at work; you're not. Dont hold us, and say your ready if you arent.

6. Just because tipping isnt customary in your country doesnt mean it isnt in ours. ~ not to be racist, but wow prove me wrong, noone has yet too.

7. You had to wait 20 minutes for a burger on a friday night? ~ hmmmmm what even to say, common sense? your in a restraunt that has a 40 minute wait, there are 250 people in the restraunt and you are angry with me, a server who has little to no outcome of the speed your food comes out. 3 ovens, 250 meals 20 mintes? i wouldnt complain but mabye i just think about things now and then.

8. booze ~ No you cant have 8 ounces of booze for the cost of 2, i will give you a full glass of booze with no ice. Noone will ever do that. hmm lets give away 6$. are you flat out retarded? no you dont get that every time your here. that would run 20$ a glass would you like another?

9. taste ~ dont eat 3/4th your plate then complain to me. i will not do anything, complain all you want, in the long run i get a better tip then money, i see my live isnt completely misreable and i have some form of morals. same concept applys to drinks.

10. Individual checks? ~ if you are in a group of 6+ for the love of god say you want seperate checks before you order. It takes mininum 10minutes to split it up afterwords once you have a app, desert and 4 drinks. if not for me, save yourself some time.

this is what happens after a 12 hours shift

By chance were you one of the guys involved in writing the script for Waiting?

If you haven't seen it, trust me when I say you will love it. That movie did for restaurant staff what Clerks did for the poor bastards like me that worked in hellhole convenience stores.

Oh, and I always tip, unless the waiter/waitress is a total prick to all the customers for no apparant reason, or seems more involved with taking personal calls than attending to any aspect of their job. As I have found, the girls that work at Boston Pizza are great at that skill of being distracted by their cell phone while on shift.
