NEW YORK (AP) A New York Police Department spokesman says the actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence.
TMZ has learned that 2006 Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams. He plays The Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

MSNBC is reporting that the actor was found, surrounded by pills.

Great call Han on the similarity between Brandon Lee and Heath Ledger in their final films. Both had the death mask look to their makeup (and their leading roles) in their last work on screen.

I remember when Heath Ledger was the bright young talent from Australia that was "the next Mel Gibson" when he played the fellow Aussie's son in the film "The Patriot" just a few years ago. Now Ledger is dead. He instantly joins the James Dean panthon of silver screen talent that left us too soon.

Back to what you were saying about the tragic irony of their last limelight look: strong resemblance.

Similar note: R&B songstress Aliyah played "Queen of the Damned" as her last role before her tragic death back in 2002.
Same terrible irony here as well - but maybe not-so-much similarity on the makeup.

Pills.. of course it was pills. A tasteless drug that is for high school kids who steal their moms Darvocets, blah. This mofo could have been smoking the dankest weed imaginable.. but he chose pills. You know what, here it comes... :biggrindaisy:

If I had to live the rest of my life being known as "That guy from Brokeback Mountain", I would've done it too.

He was still a good actor and all that jazz, but pills just piss me off.

Nobody could have played his role in 10 Things I Hate About You like he did..........

I just heard about this from a friend and thought he was kidding. What the hell?
"Problems sleeping
Ledger was taking sleeping pills after completing I'm Not There, in which he played one of the many incarnations of singer Bob Dylan.
He told The New York Times in a November interview that he "stressed out a little too much'' during the Dylan film, and had trouble sleeping while portraying the Joker, whom he called a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy".
"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told the Times.
"I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."
He said he took two Ambien pills, which only worked for an hour, the paper said."

I really hope the cause was accidental because he wouldn't follow the instructions on the bottle, and not that he was abusing pills for longer. Because the guy actually had a career, and a 2-year-old kid.

Great find Max. Your source beats the vultures at TMZ.com not only in terms of content but in the human touch in this human interest story.

Geez, wouldn't it be awful if his Method Acting while preparing for the role of The Joker sparked his need for the pills that killed him? Damn. That's what I gathered from the article. And was it tablets of Ambien that were strewn around his dead body? Ambien was mentioned in the article but it's supposed to be a non-narcotic sleep aid and perfectly safe according to their all-too-frequent commercials.

We'll see.

Interesting to read Mel Gibson's reaction. He discovered Ledger when casting "The Patriot". Sad.

You ever watch those commercials and listen to the side effects? With most everything advertised on t.v. the possible side effects are worse than the ailment you have to start with. Example: Pills for erectile dysfunction can give you a woody for 4 hours or more that may well kill you. Anti-depressants often list suicidal thoughts as a side effect (WTF?! that's what they're supposed to be helping). It's messed up.

Be interesting to hear the autopsy report. Wouldn't have thought he would've been the type to commit sideways. Most of our cousins over the ditch (aussies) are pretty well grounded. If something pisses them off they grab a six pack of 4x or Vic Bitter and drink themselves happy. He'd been living the dream life before he separated from Michelle Williams. Tragedy for his young daughter either way if it was an unfortunate accidental overdose or otherwise.
