RIAA wiped off the net (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/21/riaa_hacktivism/)

A lack of security controls allowed hackers to "wipe" the Recording Industry Association of America's (RIAA) website on Sunday.

The existence of an SQL injection attack on the RIAA's site came to light via social network news site Reddit. Soon after hackers were making merry, turning the site into a blank slate, among other things.

The RIAA has restored RIAA.org, although whether it's any more secure than before remains open to question, TorrentFreak reports (http://torrentfreak.com/riaa-website-hacked-080120).

The RIAA's high-profile lawsuits against file sharers have made it a prime target for hack attacks, so its apparent failure to apply rudimentary security controls looks especially dumb even though, as with most such attacks, little damage was actually caused.

In other hacking news, the Church of Scientology's website reportedly came under attack (http://ocmb.xenu.net/ocmb/viewtopic.php?p=287966&sid=605f20c9ce5e4bf460f511206bb1a360) last week, leaving it unavailable for parts of the weekend.

The attack was reportedly an act of hacktivism prompted by the organisation's attempts to pull a promotional video featuring Scientologist Tom Cruise from YouTube. YouTube pulled the clip, but the material has since resurfaced on Gawker.com. ®

Who did it? razor1911 perhaps? That would make them an all-purpose freedom-fighting group in the digital age.:icon_cheesygrin:

And BTW yes indeed Gawker.com has the Tom Cruise speaking on Scientology video. It was linked thru my Yahoo homepage of all places so I saw it. Mildly boring at best. Not quite all that it was made out to be but still interesting if you want to debate freedom of religion. I'll say this for Tom Cruise: he's DEDICATED. But so what?

I have no beef with someone who believes in something passionately as long as it doesn't mess with the rights of others. I don't get all this Scientology-bashing in the mainstream media these days. So what if they're out of left field with their beliefs - the only reason they get press is because all these Hollywood types are into them. It's not as if they are attempting to strike indiscriminate terror and zealous fear in the heart of the Western World or something. As long as John Travolta and Tom Cruise and Priscilla Presley or whoever don't hate on me I've got no quarrel with them for my part. I say leave them alone to their sci-fi mumbo-jumbo religion.

But crashing the RIAA site? Hell yeah - spike that sucker daily! (insert cliché maniacal cackle here):biatch:

Time for word play fun: Tom may be dedicated to Scientology, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be committed.

HA! That's perfect! And isn't that the pop culture debate of the day? How much "committment" is too much to a minor-league religion? All mainstream faiths were "cults" at one time.

See the gawk-o-the-day Tom Cruise "zealot" video HERE (http://gawker.com/5002269/the-cruise-indoctrination-video-scientology-tried-to-suppress). (and check out the Scientologists theme music for the vid: Mission Impossible Lite!)

I'll say this for Tom Cruise: he said in Scientology video either your in or get your ass out because "we" are the experts on saving the world. That's pretty much what he said in a nutshell. And he sure did laugh in a spasmodic kind of way - like he couldn't control his own emotions and they just kind of exploded out of his mouth. It was a bit eerie.

But hey - I'm not between the sheets with Katie Holmes every lovely evening so who am I to tell him what's what, eh?:muff:

IMHO, all these guys make too much money. Million dollar record deals, intellectual rights, etc. This just proves to me that even the big players have problems. Obviously, some hackers have had their way with them. Is it right? No it probably is not right. Is it funny? Yes it is hilarious. Wonder how they did it?

Truthfully, most major label artists barely make shiat. Getting somewhere between 2-6 percent of the NET sales of their albums... that's after paying the label for recording, printing, promoting and any advances. It's a total bullshit system that only really works for the label. Unless you're a total badass or have enough pull to dictate the terms of your own contract you're basically beholden to them.

As far as Scientology goes, they rabidly go after (lawsuits, slander, intimidation & threats of violence) those who criticize them (even former members) or reveal any of their inner workings. They have also been accused of murder but I'm not sure what happened with that case. (They kept someone locked up in one of their compounds while the family was trying to get them released, that person died there.) You could probably find the info @ the Operation Clambake website.
