Big Boi Ballet Details Emerge
check official site for a preview video

Last May we learned that Big Boi-- probably not the first member of Outkast you'd expect to embrace his inner Terpsichore-- was putting together his very own ballet show in collaboration with the Atlanta Ballet.

And well, folks, it's really happening. Big opens April 10 at Atlanta's Fox Theatre and will feature the man born Antwan Patton moving his body about artistically alongside members of his Purple Ribbon Entertainment troupe and the Ballet. Act fast though; the extravaganza of sound and motion only runs for six performances and closes April 13.

According to NME.com (http://www.nme.com), the production will feature a full live band, with musical selections from the Outkast catalog and Big Boi's own forthcoming solo album. There's also talk of taking Big, which was choreographed by Lauri Stallings, over to Europe later in 2008.

Those Outkast guys are innovators. I always thought Andre 3000 was the open-minded, free-spirited artist of the two and Big Boi was more about modern hip-hop's meat and potatoes (bitches & guns). But that's not true, is it? Big Boi was the star of their movie "Idlewild" and that was a 30's period piece with showtunes and hip-hop merged into something no one had ever thought of before (or thought would work). Their combined talents make for one hell of a combo in the studio and on screen.

I'll be interested to se what comes of this ballet project. I'm sure it will be well-received. Everybody loves their experiments in hip-hop fusion. I hope they continue to collaborate frequently (even tho it sounds like this is strictly a Big Boi project).

They've gone a lot farther than I expected. Hip-hop from the South was just starting to break onto the scene when their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmusic (sp?) hit the streets in the mid-90's. I was skeptical. I thought some of the tracks were cool but I never expected them to evolve into renaissance men.

Thanks for the share.

Actually you'd be surprised by what some of these "Street thugs" are into. If you expose them to Opera or an orchestra piece, s lot of times (when they're open minded) they'll actually get into it. Of course when they hit the streets it's back to bitches, ho's, and gats. When I was working for the local arena (as security), a few times they had me posted to work back stage or stage door, and I must say from the bands I met (no really famous ones), the people they were backstage was totally different from the people on stage.

Njohnson, I agree with all you said; however, I have bad news for you. They have been on the outs for a couple of years now. I think outkast will be no more. Remember speekerbox/the love below. They could not even do that album together...
