Fire guts Batavia home
Homeowners see the fire on TV news while on vacation in Florida

A firefighter was injured and a house destroyed in a tough fire in Batavia Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to the home of Ted and Heidi Kauss at 937 Robin Drive around 6:30 p.m. The Kausses were away on vacation in Florida but in their hotel room managed to see their house engulfed in flames on Chicago's WGN national broadcast.

Cold weather, wind and a collapsed floor made the blaze difficult to fight, said Batavia Battalion Chief Randy Banker. It took 75 firefighters and 12 engines until about 10 p.m. to get the fire under control.

"It was really cold weather, and there was a decent wind out of the south that fanned the fire," he said.

The home is a total loss, with more than $500,000 damage to the home and its contents.

Lt. Robert White Jr. slipped on some ice and hurt his back, Banker said. He was treated and released from Provena Mercy Center in Aurora.

No one was home at the time of the fire, Banker said. The family could not be reached for comment Friday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but started in the basement of the home, the fire department said.

Crews from Geneva, St. Charles, Elburn, Sugar Grove, Aurora, North Aurora, West Chicago, Winfield and Montgomery assisted at the scene and at the Batavia department.

Firefighters remained on the scene throughout the night checking for hot spots.

Damn, that really puts a damper on the vacation. Here's my advice: Take this as a sign that you should take the half a mil in insurance money and stay in Florida. Your house obviously didn't want you to come back, so enjoy never having to shovel snow again.

...No one was home at the time of the fire.

They should be glad.

What a fooking genius writer. No one was home... No shit, the subtitle says they watched it on TV while on vacation. Who else would have been home. And if no one was available for comments, how in the hell did they know that the homeowners watched it on TV?

I can see the situation through my marraige. I would just sit there staring with unbelief and my wife would be freaking the hell out and probably start breaking stuff.

After a full day of activities, I use TV as a sedative. Put me to sleep every time. Though if I saw my house afire, I would probably have thrown a party and called a realtor in the Florida area......

That would SUCK. I watched my house burn in person. That was bad enough, but to be on vacation and watch all your personal stuff get destroyed would be worse. You have to think about the little things. Old pictures of family and friends, all your cd's, anything you ever had autographed, your birth certificate, your marriage license, all that stuff that you didn't put in a fire safe.

I bet the Fire Officials will have a few questions for the Homeowners....
