Beauty queen accused of torture out on bond
Tucson police have issued arrest warrants for two men in connection with the investigation of University of Arizona law student Kumari Semone Fulbright, 25, on five felony charges.
TPD spokesman Sgt. Fabian Pacheco said Tuesday that warrants were issued Dec. 10 for brothers Robert Arthur Ergonis, 44, and Michael Guy Ergonis, 46, charging them with kidnapping, aggravated assault and armed robbery.
Police believe the brothers are no longer in the city, Pacheco said.
"We have reason to believe they have international ties, Pacheco, although he declined to innumerate the reason.
Fulbright was charged Dec. 18 with armed robbery, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault, related to holding her 24-year-old ex-boyfriend hostage.
Fulbright, who is a former beauty queen and a law student volunteer for U.S. District Judge Raner Collins, is free on bail.
A third man involved in the incident, Larry B. Hammond, 40, was indicted with Fulbright and remains in Pima County Jail on a $50,000 bond, Pacheco said.
According to the police investigation, Robert Ergonis was Fulbright's boyfriend before she dated the 24-year-old man.
Ergonis had given Fulbright a large amount of expensive jewelry, which they believed the 24-year-old had stolen, Pacheco said.
On Dec. 8, Fulbright invited the 24-year-old to her apartment in the 1200 block of East Knox Drive, Pacheco said.
Once he was there, she said she needed a shower and asked him to wait for her. While she was in the shower, the Ergonis brothers arrived, tied the victim's hands behind his back with plastic cable, accused him of stealing the jewelry and threatened him with handguns, Pacheco said.
Fulbright came out of the shower and "participated in the threatening behavior," Pacheco said, including "biting him in the hands and arm area."
According to court records filed with the indictment, Fulbright also allegedly held the tip of a butcher knife in the victim's ear and pointed a pistol at him.
The group then transported the victim in an SUV to a house in the 2400 block of North Bryant Drive, near East Grant Road and North Alvernon Way, where Hammond lived, Pacheco said.
Hammond threatened the victim for an undetermined length of time before Fulbright and the Ergonis brothers took the victim back to the East Knox Drive apartment.
At that point, the Ergonis brothers left, telling Fulbright to guard her ex-boyfriend with a gun, said Pacheco.
He was able to free one of his hands from the cable ties, then wrestled with Fulbright to try to get the gun, Pacheco said. The gun discharged, but neither party was hit, he said.
Pacheco said the victim began screaming loudly and pulled Fulbright outside. When onlookers appeared, Fulbright ran back into her apartment and the victim ran to a nearby house to call police and report his nearly 10-hour ordeal, Pacheco said.
Fulbright was named Miss Pima County in 2005 and Miss Desert Sun in 2006 and ran for Miss Arizona those years. She also served on the UA Faculty Senate Task Force for Campus Child Care and worked at a UA bookstore.
