In what could be an environmental, penal and fashion trend, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has created the first chain gang for a specific crime: DUI.

Sheriff Joe is best known for issuing pink underwear to jail inmates and housing them in old military tents. He has made another interesting penal fashion choice, mixing the classic black and white bar pants with a bright pink long sleeve shirt emblazoned with “Clean (ing) and Sober” on the front and “Sheriff D.U.I. Chain Gang” on the back. :gheyer:

The gang is tasked with cleaning up roadsides and burying the homeless and indigent, most of whom were alcoholics.

"It's good to get out of the tents and be in the public," said the 30-year-old Glendale resident. "Hopefully it keeps someone from drinking and driving." McDaniel said he found his attire "a little embarrassing." "I don't like the color pink, but I can live with it," he said. :xxrotflmao:

Arizona had the sixth-highest number of alcohol-related fatalities in the nation last year at 585, up 15 percent from the previous year, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration records.
