The plane apparently only had its front left landing gear working and performed a belly-flop landing, causing the wheel to break and sparks to fly from the bottom as it skidded onto the runway.

Emergency fire units immediately sprayed the plane down with in case of any fire and a male and female passenger both emerged from the aircraft on their own. Neither were hurt.

Officials say the man was an experienced flight instructor and was piloting the plane during the landing. He was training the woman, described as being in her 20s and learning to be a commercial pilot.

The Cessna 172 plane was registered to Ameriflyers out of Florida. An executive for the Pompano Beach company said the pilot did everything by the book.
