The troubles of Rodney King -- whose videotaped beating by four Los Angeles police officers and their subsequent acquittal touched off riots in 1992 -- continued late Wednesday night when he was shot in the face and shoulder with a pellet gun while biking in the San Bernardino area, police said today.
Investigators were interviewing King, 42, at the hospital this afternoon trying to determine "what is factual," San Bernardino Police Lt. Scott Paterson said. FOR THE RECORD:
An earlier version of this article said King had been shot in Rialto.
King initially called Rialto police at 11:40 p.m. and told them he had been shot at 5th Street and Meridian Avenue in San Bernardino before pedaling his bike home, according to Rialto Police Sgt. Don Lewis.
"We sent a couple of officers out to his address here in Rialto, but he didn't really tell us a whole lot other than he'd been shot," Lewis said. "He took some pellets to his face, back and upper torso. . . . It looked like birdshot, looked like long-distance shot."
Lewis said Rialto police turned the incident over to police in San Bernardino when King said he had been shot in that community.
Paterson said San Bernardino police were still trying to determine where the incident occurred. He said he had no information on possible suspects or whether the dispute might have been domestic. He also said he could not confirm news reports that King was intoxicated.
"All we know is that he was shot," Paterson said.
The 1992 riots erupted after a jury acquitted white LAPD officers in the videotaped beating. Since the incident launched King into the media stratosphere, he has had a string of arrests.
In September 2005, he was arrested by Rialto police for allegedly threatening to kill his daughter and his daughter's mother after the two women got into an argument with his then-girlfriend.
Rialto police arrested him in October 2003 for allegedly punching his girlfriend in the stomach. Earlier that year, he pleaded guilty to reckless driving under the influence after slamming into a house with his car. He spent time in jail for assaulting one of his daughters.
Lewis said Rialto police had been called out to King's Jackson Street home numerous times in the last eight months.
"It was normal neighborhood stuff ... drinking and loud parties, stuff like that," he said.

I've heard different reports, from a pellet gun to a shotgun, regardless, unfortunately he's still alive.
