After living in other major cities across america it all seems all the same.Phenoix,Portland LA Denver....Lets b clear you can get your ass shot in any of these cities...
A publishing company that each year ranks the “most dangerous cities” in the United States says it does so to encourage “local conversation” about crime prevention. But in the city that topped this year’s list, Detroit, people are talking only about how much they think the researchers manipulated and sensationalized the data.
Detroit’s police chief, Ella Bully-Cummings, made the rounds on local television and radio shows lambasting CQ Press, a unit of Congressional Quarterly, which publishes the rankings. Chief Bully-Cummings called the list “an injustice to society as a whole” in an interview with one T.V. station, and told another that the rankings have no merit other than “shock value.”
“After today, what people will walk away with is that if you set foot in the city of Detroit, you are going to get killed, and that is absolutely not true,” she told The Detroit News.
The city put out a news release containing criticism of the study from the president of the American Society of Criminology, and explaining that most shootings in Detroit are drug-related and not random. It also points out that some major cities, like Chicago and Minneapolis, were left out of the rankings because they do not report their crime data to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where CQ Press gets the figures it uses.
The rankings came out at a particularly inopportune time for Detroit, both because the city has been making progress in shedding its decades-old image as a haven for crime and because of several high-profile recent killings. On Monday, a price war between two neighboring gas stations led to one of the owners shooting his rival to death, and last month two children, ages 6 and 9, were among the victims of a quadruple murder at a known drug house.
(A grisly murder last week, in which authorities say two teenagers stabbed, beheaded and burned an acquaintance “for the thrill of it,” occurred well outside the city –- not far from one of three Detroit suburbs that CQ Press listed among the country’s 25 safest cities.)
Violent crime has declined in Detroit, which has about 900,000 people, but the city is nonetheless on a pace for more than 400 murders this year. It was second on the list last year, behind St. Louis, which led the rankings in 2006 and 2005.
Detroit got a bit of help in its campaign against CQ Press from Gawker.com, the New York-based media gossip site, which sarcastically congratulated St. Louis for dropping to No. 2, and offered this take:
The annual list, compiled from FBI crime statistics, helps reinforce the cycle of poverty, white flight, and neglect that is killing post-industrial America while the rich create unsustainable fantasy worlds on the coasts. And it provides a nice way for a news anchor to fill up 45

njohnson747 11-23-07, 12:48 AM I live an hour from Detroit in a quiet Michigan small town setting but Detroit is loved by all here. Sure people get spooked when they have to go into the city to go see a game (any game anywhere in the city) or a concert but it's all good. You get used to it.
Whoa! Poor people! Desperate people! Yes, they exist. And yes, they have them in droves in the Motor City where GM is pulling the heart right out of the economy with their inglorious departure. Motown is just an easy target, that's all. And it has a large black population which has historically gotten a bad rap by the press ever since the 60's. I will break my own rule here and use the "N" word now so forgive me: I believe Detroit is all too often subtlely portrayed in the national media as Niggertown USA. Worse even than Oakland, CA. That's a fact as I see it and I'm no Michael Moore (from Flint, MI). I just know that "white flight" keeps new capital investment from moving into the broken industrial heart of the city (and that of the nearby capital of Michigan where I live) and therefore everyone on the street is seen as a potentital bad guy when you walk downtown.
Or so they would have you believe in the paper and on TV. I'm not scared by some guy with broken English hawking bootleg t-shirts outside Joe Louis Arena. I'm afraid of the half-drunk, college educated pedophile I sat near at the pub last night in this small-town, "safe" part of the world. I've got my evil eye on that bad guy. He's the one you can't see coming.
Funk all that. Detroit rocks!
Wow. I didn't realize anyone else here at all was from Michigan.
I can say, I work as a PI in Detroit (mostly in Detroit), and I see all the shit that goes on. The fucked up stuff. The stuff that happens when nobody thinks anyone is watching. The shit that never ges reported.
Is it the most violent place in the country? I can't answer that, because I'm sure a lot happens in other places that nobody knows about. Is it dangerous? Goddamn right it is. Do we get a bad rep? Yes, but it's not like it's based on fiction.
ZeroAccuracy 11-23-07, 05:32 AM I'm about 20 miles south of Detroit. Overall, Detroit has its good parts and bad parts, just like any city. Its no big deal to go there, but it fucking sucks trying to drive through.
Fl_Gulfer 11-23-07, 05:40 PM I grew up just north of downtown in the Rochester area went to war in 71 and only went back for a few years at a time but there was a few years in the 80's that I lived in the slums buy 6 mile and groesbeck, never was bothered by my neighbors, even thought I was the only white guy on the street, I drove a new caddy and parked it on the street in front of my house, and it was never bothered, it could have been because I shot the rats in the back ally from my kitchen window at all ours of the day and night. But I smartened up and retired here in Florida about 6 years ago.
tonyrone99 02-23-08, 10:04 PM Ahhh...a Detroit post! I grew up there during the 70's in my childhood years. I have a few questions to ask y'all:
1. Does a grade school called "Pattengale" still in existence? I hope I spelled it right...
2. Do you still have that HUGE yellow thing called the "Giant Slide"? It was in Belle Isle Park last I remember. It was essentially a large metal sliding board where you walked up a few stories with a piece of canvas and slid down the board's surface. It was a blast back then!
3. Do you still have a restaurant called "Burger Chef & Jeff"?
4. ...how about a restaurant called the "Red Barn"?
5. My last address was 10229 Mcquade St. -- Is that area still there, or has it been replaced with something else?
Thanks, I'm having fun reminiscing about my childhood!!! :thanks:

Thanks! While I'm glad to hear that the Giant Slide is still there, I'm sad to learn that my old school may be gone...damn, damn, damn!!! Two other schools I attended were "Winterhalter" and "Keidan." Those were VERY fond memories during that time, and I can still associate many events at that time with certain songs that came out as well.
I remember learning how to ride a bike, flying kites, owning my first BB/pellet gun, my paper delivery route, school trips [especially the one to Greenfield Villiage] etc etc. etc.. I also use to go to the Cobo arena and watch wrestling too. It was awesome seeing Mr. "BoBo Brazil" in person!!!!
tonyrone99 02-24-08, 02:12 AM Here's my first BB/pellet gun:

Unfortunately, Burger Chef and Jeff went away a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago. I have memories of going there, and being excited because they put BACON on their cheeseburgers, and that blew my mind at 5 years old. The last one I remember in existance was a gas station for at least a decade, and currentlly a Kinko's. I think the Burger Chef in my area went under about 20-25 years ago. One day, it was just gone. All the others are long gone, as well.
Fun little thing, though. Last summer, on XM, they turned the 60s channel into a classic CKLW show for 3 hours, running old news bits and commercials. Several Burger Chef and Jeff commercials, along with commercials for the Grande Ballroom, Edgewater Park, some downriver 18 and under club (where the Amboy Dukes were playing), and the premier of "A Hard Day's Night" at the Mai Kai theater.
I recorded the show, and still have it saved on my XM reciever. I miss The Big 8, even though it's heyday was a few years before my time.
tonyrone99 02-24-08, 07:17 PM Wow Rev, you actually remember Burger Chef and Jeff...awesome! Thanks for that info. too.
Wow Rev, you actually remember Burger Chef and Jeff...awesome! Thanks for that info. too.
I honestly have no memories of it after 1983 or so (as I said, I was only 5), and I never actually knew it as "Burger Chef and Jeff", I just knew it as "Burger Chef". So I started doing net-searches for it a few years ago, because nobody I've ever met (my age) remembers the place and I didn't want to think I was making up. ANYHOW, I came to this site. (http://www.freewebs.com/burgerchef/index.htm) and this one (http://members.aol.com/jsf605213/myhomepage/)
I could've sworn there used to be a more definitive site, but it must've been taken down.
ZeroAccuracy 02-25-08, 05:13 AM Since we're already on the topic of food, I'll toss this add up (I'm no way affiliated with this place):
Anyone looking for a fucking amazing burger for dirt cheap (1/2 lb burger + lettuce, onions, pickles, and peppers) for $.95, and $3 for a plate of fries that will fill 2 - 3 people, should head out to Half-Time Bar in Taylor. I ate there two days ago with two friends, we each had a burger, pops, and split a large fry with a total bill of $7.

I'm surprised how many people from the area are on here. I mean, it's not a lot, but when I signed up I figured there wasn't going to be any. We should have a drunken get-together.

ZeroAccuracy 02-25-08, 01:22 PM I'm from Southgate. Its right between Taylor, Trenton, Lincoln Park, and Riverview. I'll have to pass on the getting drunk part with you though. I'm only 19, so in two years, I may take you up on that.
tamsnod27 02-25-08, 02:57 PM Burger Chef(Jeff was just a marketing ploy, like the Noid for Dominos) was purchesed by Hardees in the early 80's. I had one where I lived in WV. Occasionally Hardees tried to bring something up from the old menu, but since I worked at Hardees during college for a couple of months in the kitchen, I rarely go to Hardees.
ZeroAccuracy 02-25-08, 04:14 PM All of the Hardees north of Ohio closed down probably 10+ years ago.
MostlyHarmless 02-25-08, 05:17 PM Yeah, it'd be a 2-1/2 hour drive (each way) If i was in the mood for a Monster Burger... sucks.
All of the Hardees north of Ohio closed down probably 10+ years ago.
There's still one in Utica, and I think Kalamazoo. I went to the Utica one last year, and anytime I'm out in that area, I stop in.
Can't wait for the Sonic to be finished (Southgate)
ZeroAccuracy 02-26-08, 04:13 PM There's a Sonic coming in Southgate? That's really strange. We haven't had a new business here in a long time, everyone else is closing up shop and heading to a more prosperous area.
Fl_Gulfer 02-26-08, 09:33 PM There used to be a burger joint in Pontiac in the late 60's early 70's that served a 1lb burger and a 1lb hotdog. It had a sign out front called Home of the Monster Burger. They had a deal if you could eat a Monster Burger a order of fries and a lg drink you didn't have to pay. Many had tried and most had failed. I only saw one guy do it and he was a nutcase. It was when we was in High School. We used to go to White Castle and eat a 100 sliders when we were stonded on the mean green, there were 3 of us though. I remember Burger Chief.

Agreed, I miss the Burger Chef that was in my old hometown of Kokomo, Indiana. They had the best chocolate shakes ever. They were noted for flame broiling and fast service. Place closed and they knocked it down, put in a car wash. The times they are a changing. Hardee's is good but it lacks the feel of the Burger Chef.|-)
mr_wiggles 02-27-08, 03:06 AM no carls junior or hot n now not even a cluck you chicken...wattaburger....nope....there are lots of fast food chains that arent in michigan....i like pizza
