Buy dot com is selling the following:

Kingston 2GB PC2-5300 667MHZ 200-Pin SODIMM DDR2 Laptop Memory

for 57.95 with free shipping. Is this a good deal? How can I find out if it will work in my laptop? I have a Toshiba that is almost 2 years old. I think it currently has 512 MB.

Yup, and pricewatch.com will let you see what other companies are charging. (I don't have a laptop, so I haven't priced RAM for them. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.)

The memory itself is worth every penny but the laptop may be incompatable unless it can handle the DDR2 .

Good point, Grilly, forgot about that (my brain is in desktop-land). Ok, it's a Toshiba (Sattelite, I presume), but what model number? I'm sure we can find the spec's and let you know if the RAM is incompatible.

ditto on crucial.com - Front page will let you drill down to the make and model of your desktop/laptop and tell you what is supported. They are usually pretty competitive on price, too, so it will give you an idea of how good a deal that is. FWIW - Crucial is the front end store for Micron memory, so those are the components on their stuff, unless otherwise noted.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite M45 - S2692

Model Number PSM42U - 019006

Thanks for your help guys...

you still have to check for compatability but the specs that came back from a memory search on it say it uses DDR2 in the following description. Premium Memory > 256MB (1X256MB) PC24200 NONECC UNBUFFERED 200PIN DDR2 SODIMM Memory

So yes it SHOULD work fine.

I think all you can add is DDR2 PC2 4200 I don't think PC2-5300 will work in 4200

Faster RAM will just run at a lower speed, if it's cheaper then buy... otherwise there's no point unless you're overclocking or you think you might upgrade to another laptop that will need more RAM of that type.

All I know is that I need ram and cheep. Seeing how I have 2 slots and one is 512mb, i could just get another stick like the one I have a double the ram? What kind of difference would I see, twice as fast? I am not sure about the particulars of memory. How can I find out the exact stick I have?

Thanks all for the help!

You can, but you may waste them. Well, not waste them in entirety, but somewhat. Like a dwarf living in a house with 8' ceilings. It's not hurting, but it's not helping.

If your board takes, say, DDR2-667 max and you buy and install DDR2-800, then it'll just run at a max speed of 667. You could overclock, and that's exactly why many buy these. That's because there's no CPU out there that has a higher FSB than the 667 (333)that is needed to run even the latest 1333-cored CPU's (333) at 1:1 ratio.

Mind you (and everyone reading)that this is only relative to your question and not an overall suggesting that higher rated memory isn't better
