He needn't have worried: He scored a perfect 2400.
Four months later, John took the ACT and scored a perfect 36.
The Kentucky teen's double perfection on the two college-entrance exams is an unusual feat, said educators and officials with ACT and the College Board, which administers the SAT.
During the 2006-07 school year, more than 2.2 million ACT tests were administered. Only 177 came back with a 36. And of the nearly 2.6 million SAT exams taken, only 335 came back with a 2400.
Scoring perfectly on one exam is hard enough, but to score perfectly on both exams is a "remarkable achievement," ACT spokeswoman Kristin Crouse said.
John thinks his preparation for the SAT, which included attending a three-week summer camp and studying several test-preparation books, and taking the SAT first, helped pave the way for his ACT success.
"I think the ACT was a side effect of studying so hard for the SAT," the 17-year-old Danville High School senior said.
Win Smith, principal at Danville High, described John as being a "very quiet, yet very active student with a sense of humor.
"I've been at Danville for a total of 23 years and I don't ever remember a student scoring perfectly on both the SAT and ACT," Smith said. "We are very proud of him."
John said he isn't sure what his college major will be, but he is certain it will have something to do with math or science. He is applying to Yale University, Washington University and Northwestern University.
