This is what happened the last time they had a fire sale: Bin Laden bought the lot of AK-47s.

Personally I'll take one of the mid-ranged MiGs and paint a big ol' American flag on it. That way I don't get shot down by the Michigan National Guard on their wild wilderness weekends.

Are there some online docs that show Russia sold weapons to the Taliban? Cause I recall they hated them... A nice chunk of the 80s involved Russia fighting the Mujahideen in Afghanistan and w/ America's support the Mujahideen was holding them off.

Rambo III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rambo_III) was all about Rambo first supplying weapons to and then fighting along side the "noble freedom fighters" of the Mujahideen. The plot was loosely based on the fact that the US was arming them cause we hated the Russians so bad. It's of course now been biting us in the ass getting shot at with our own weapons: http://www.commondreams.org/headlines01/0923-01.htm

i wonder how much it would cost just to maintain after the purchase?

seems like a expensive printer sold at a cheap price except that every refill of the ink catridge ends up costing more than the printer itself!

^^That's what I was thinking, too. Great buys, but getting replacement parts would be next to impossible. And I think its bad when I have to wait two days for parts for my foreign cars.

You'd have to buy a supermodel Russian bride that was into machining and military equipment and then build yourself a machine shop to design the parts in. Maybe you could make side money by building performance parts for exotic racers. Hmmm yes... and while you're at it you might as well get started on your underwater secret hideout.

well after working on fighters for a while, i would suggest buying at least 5 of the Su-27 Flankers.

buy the high end one at $15,000,000. then buy some mid-ranged ones. you're going to have to cannibalize parts from the cheap ones. this should give you about a year of flying time. not 365 days but a year.

when all the parts are used up sell the airframes to a middle school in your are for a static display. if they don't have the money maybe they can have a bake sale to buy the fighter.

don't forget to recycle.

If I had a hind, I would have to track down Sylvester Stallone and chase him around for a while. Even though the movie ones are fake.

The GIF clip of the guy with the turban shooting the AK-47 is from the 2005 movie "Lord of War". In that (very) good film the massive illegal arms bazaar that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union is discussed in depth. It is that single event that sent the worldwide proliferation of small arms skyrocketing to new heights in the early 90's. Militant forces of significance that benefited directly from the millions of RPGs, AK-47s etc on the black market at that time include groups with hostile intent found in the Middle East and in sub-saharan Africa.

The small arms were in fact sold through middlemen - arms dealers of every stripe - from their Soviet starting point to whomever had the ready cash anywhere in the world. The destination points for this massive influx of guns onto the black market includes (to a lesser extent) the streets of inner-city America as well.

Good question.

Yeah, that's what I thought... middlemen.. black market sales. But not from the Russian govt. themselves. The Kalashnikov is the most ubiquitous firearm on the planet. Apparently it's been cloned by Chinese (and probably other) manufacturers too.

Yeah, the Chinese, Romanians, Cheks, etc... The best ones were made in the motherland tho, more reliable.
