'We have broken speed of light' (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2007/08/16/scispeed116.xml)

A pair of German physicists claim to have broken the speed of light - an achievement that would undermine our entire understanding of space and time.

According to Einstein's special theory of relativity, it would require an infinite amount of energy to propel an object at more than 186,000 miles per second.

However, Dr Gunter Nimtz and Dr Alfons Stahlhofen, of the University of Koblenz, say they may have breached a key tenet of that theory.

The pair say they have conducted an experiment in which microwave photons - energetic packets of light - travelled "instantaneously" between a pair of prisms that had been moved up to 3ft apart.

Being able to travel faster than the speed of light would lead to a wide variety of bizarre consequences.

For instance, an astronaut moving faster than it would theoretically arrive at a destination before leaving.

The scientists were investigating a phenomenon called quantum tunnelling, which allows sub-atomic particles to break apparently unbreakable laws.

Dr Nimtz told New Scientist magazine: "For the time being, this is the only violation of special relativity that I know of."

Of course. If you could grab a piece of space/time and bring it to you, technically, you'd be going faster than the speed of light.

Didn't Dr Feynman and friends predict something like this years ago? Quantum Physics is interesting, but going beyond the speed of light, how could it be done? How do you prove it? Teleporting would be nice, but I would be afraid of mixing up my molecules with too many other things.

I was just reading this at another site. Now it realy makes me wonder if the Mayan people new that the world change forever on Dec. 21, 2012, I figure someone will go back in time and fuck everything up and we will all just vanish, like we never exsisted. That should give you all something to think about.

It would suck if the end time was Dec. 21, 2012.... the kids would only be 10...

But if someone goes back in time to wipe out the world by accident... wouldn't they have already done it? Or does going back in time create some sort of parallel alternate dimension? In which case we'll be fine, that other dimension/universe will get jacked up.

P.S. Another interesting quantum effect is: Action at a distance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_at_a_distance_(physics))

Forget all this stuff. All you really need is a Delorean going 88mph outfitted with a flux capacitor, and a few cases of plutonium, and you're set.

That's interesting ! but I wonder if something living would survive !
And before thinking to go back in time & fsck this world, why not just think
to avoid screwing it as we're doing it right now ?
