A California meat supplier has greatly expanded a voluntary recall of ground beef products in 11 Western states, including Utah, because of possible contamination with E. coli bacteria.
On Thursday, a spokesman for United Food Group LLC said nearly 7,000 pounds of ground beef sold under the Moran's label were pulled from 48 Albertsons stores in Utah.
The Vernon, Calif., meat supplier said it is expanding its nationwide recall to an additional 370,000 pounds of ground beef because of "unspecified concerns" by the California State Department of Health Services. The supplier initially recalled 75,000 pounds of ground beef on Sunday.
Lyle Orwig, spokesman for United Food, said the company is expanding the recall to include products made on April 13 at its Vernon, Calif., plant. The products in the original recall were produced on April 20.
The labels of the recalled products bear the establishment number "EST. 1241" inside the USDA mark of inspection or printed on the package.
All of the products bear a sell-by date of "Apr/29/07" or "Apr/30/07", a freeze-by date of "Apr/28/07" or "Apr/30/07" or a produce-on date of "April 13-07."
The fresh chubs, or tubes of recalled ground beef, were distributed under five brand names -- Moran's All Natural, Miller Meat Co., Stater Bros., Inter-American Products Inc. and Basha's -- to 13 supermarket chains including Albertsons, Basha's, Grocery Outlet, Fry's, "R" Ranch Markets, Sam's Club, Save-A-Lot, Save-Mart, Scolari's Wholesale Markets, Smart and Final, Smith's Food and Drug, Stater Bros. and Superior Warehouse Club supermarkets.
In the original recall, Supervalu Inc. pulled ground beef products sold under the Moran's label at Albertsons stores in Utah, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. The recalled products had sell-by dates from April 20 through May 7, said Donna Eggers, a communications manager with Albertsons.
None of Smith's Food and Drug's 47 Utah stores was affected by the beef recall, said Marsha Gilford, a Smith's spokeswoman.
"We bought only a limited amount of ground beef product, which ended up in our New Mexico stores," Gilford said. "These instances serve as reminders that we should cook ground beef to an internal temperature of at least 155 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 14 cases of infection with E. coli bacteria reported nationwide may be linked to the beef recall, including one case of illness in Salt Lake County. The state Department of Health reported that the patient has since recovered.
Symptoms of E. coli include stomach cramps that may be severe and diarrhea that may turn bloody within one to three days. E. coli sometimes can lead to complications, including kidney failure.
Customers should either throw away the products or return them to the store for a full refund or exchange. Customers with questions can call United Food's hotline at 1-800-325-4164.
