Rare Whales Spotted In Monterey Bay
MONTEREY, Calif. -- Some rare and unique killer whales made a brief appearance in Monterey Bay over the weekend.
Marine biologists said they spotted about 60 southern-resident killer whales this weekend.
They said the whales aren't the typical orcas seen a few times a year in the area and have traveled all the way from the Pacific Northwest.

The whales are considered endangered; scientists said they're the only endangered group of killer whales.
Biologists said the sighting is a major breakthrough for researchers who are trying to figure out where the whales go during the winter.
