moonman 03-20-07, 05:00 PM I just bought a 30 GB generation 6 Ipod Video. Other ipod users, please give me advice. I am mainly going to use it for music and pictures, however, on plane trips, a movie would be nice.
Ipod users, help a brother out.
njohnson747 03-20-07, 06:50 PM I've got a 30Gb iPod with video as well. I'm not sure if it's the same generation as yours but I will say that after 8 months of use I had to have the main internal board replaced by Best Buy technicians. The iPod was repaired - not replaced (a surprise) and now functions fine. At least it has in the week since I got it back.
I would recommend first and foremost to keep your warranty information and original reciept in a safe place. You may need it. I've been through two failed iPods since 2003 and it wasn't wear and tear that got'em. They just...died.
On the positive side of things I would say invest in a decent pair of headphones to enjoy the rich sound experience that comes with the iPod. I found that Sony makes the best headphones both for high end ($160 price) and average end ($20 price). They beat Bose and all the rest in my opinion. I bought both pair for my iPod and the sound quality is stupendous.
What I'm also saying is the headphones that come with the iPod are crap, really. They are notoriously poor in quality relative to the main product. Keep 'em in the wrapper in case you have to return the iPod and instead get yourself a good set of Sony headphones. The Sony headphones that wrap around the ear are the best for the money ($20).
I'm a big fan of iTunes and hopefully you have your stuff converted to that "AAC" format. I would caution anyone against buying music directly from iTunes. You as the end-user only have a limited number of machines you can load the music onto. If you reformat your PC it means you have used up another one of your alotted five licensed load chances. After that the iTune you have purchased locks up and you can't listen to it. It's a shitty deal but that's one of their piracy protection features and it can bite an iTunes consumer in the butt (like me).
Same with iTunes music videos - but it's worth it. Those are so cool! I loved watching the full-length "Thriller" video on my iPod. My iPod wows anyone who sees video on it. The resolution is great and of course the sound rocks. Try our your video capabilities with one of those iTunes videos to start. If you want other video to play on your iPod, well, it has to be Quicktime format.
However I should say congratulations Moonman! The iPod as a product is well worth the investment. It is truely a music library that you can carry with you in the palm of your hand. But keep your receipt - just in case.
njohnson747 03-21-07, 12:17 AM This will look familiar to Moonman as it is the advice I gave him but I thought I'd share. The topic is music library format conversion and size management. Please comment on a better (or refined) method so Moonman can get his music up and running on his new 30GB iPod.
Here's how I effectively whittled down my 70GB of music onto a 30gb iPod (and corresponding iTunes library on my PC).
I installed iTunes (of course) and then I imported everything from my MP3-formatted data DVDs into my iTunes library. Everything, import everything to iTunes. This will initially take up a ton of space since your MP3s will now be duplicated in your iTunes Library as music in AAC format - but that's just part of the process.
If you don't have a ton of space to use as a music management workspace on your primary drive then import chunks of MP3 music as large as your available primary drive space can handle. Make these chunks by going into your existing library and split your MP3 collection into separate folders each, say, 15 GB in size in my case (depending on your available space on your primary drive). I call these folders "chunk folders" and they will encompass your entire music collection when combined.
Then under the iTunes "File" dropdown menu select "import". Import your first chunk folder - all of it. The stuff you want, the stuff you don't...everything. The iTunes application will sort your MP3 formatted stuff by artist, song title (etc.) into it's new AAC format. That ability to convert and keep song ID info intact is key to management of music dring a conversion to a new format - AAC in this case.
Now you've got chunk folder #1 imported into your new iTunes library. Now scroll down through your entire library as imported so far and decide what artists you want (or what albums) and what you don't. For example: if I've got my first 15GB chunk folder imported I'll scroll down through the massive list of artists. As I scroll through the huge list I'll write down the ones I don't want on my 30gb iPod on a piece of notebook paper.
Then I use the "Search" function on iTunes to isolate those unwanted music files. Example: in my case I have the Beastie Boys imported from MP3 to iTunes but I really don't want them on my iPod since I only have 30GB of iPod space to work with. After all - I have a 70GB total size for my entrire collection and I have to make tough decisions about what to put on that 30GB limited space.
So I run a search for all Beastie Boys music in iTunes using the search function located in the top right of my iTunes window. Then under the "Edit" dropdown menu I hit "select all" to highlight all Beastie Boys songs. Then I go to the middle of the highlighted portion of the screen and right click. Under the dropdown menu that appears I hit "delete" and the iTunes program asks me if I want to delete the music files from the iTunes music library. I say yes, hell yes because it's all about saving room in my iTunes library WHICH CANNOT EXCEED 30GB. Your iTunes library will be mirrored perfectly onto your iPod once the PC and the iPod are connected. You manage your music from your library - not from your iPod.
Remember: I've still got the original MP3s on data DVD after all. I can re-import and keep the stuff I deleted from iTunes at a later date as I see fit.
Now it's time to import chunk file #2. Again one must bear in mind that you can only have an iTunes library that is a maximum size of 30GB with a iPod like mine so pick your music you want to go mobile with sparingly. I had to cull 70GB down to a workable 30GB and I think this is the fastest way to do it. I speak from experience. Import all your MP3's in chunks to iTunes and then chop it down (deleting by artist or by album if you want to get more surgical) using the artist search, select and delete function. The goal is to cut down your entire library of music into a mobile collection in a minimum amount of time. This is how I have done it.
But then again this is my method. There may well be more efficient ways of accomplishing music format conversion and library trimming for iPods and other mobile music devices. If anyone else has other methods (or refinements on this one) I'd like to read about them as well.
