Sometime's I zoom into only a few words in a whole post and I go after it like a pitbull ^_^. As an example in a post on an internet-gaming site that I'm a member of , The two word's "ANY IDEAS" jumped out at me and I was off on a tangent. Big Mistake :P Here's the post and my answer to it.As well as my viewpoint to "THE QUESTION"
"" I have a http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T-Series&model=T1440
CPU: Intel® Celeron® Processor 1.40GHz (w/256KB L2 cache)
Operating System: Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Chipset: Intel® 810e chipset
Memory: 512 PC133
Hard Drive: 40GB HDD
Optical Drives: 24 × 10x40x Max. CD-RW Drive
3.5" 1.44MB FDD
Video: Nvidia GF MX4000
Sound: AC '97 Audio
Network: 10/100Mbps built-in Ethernet
would it be worth it to replace the chip gor a faster Set-up for an easy $50 +/-??
and if so any ideas? ""

And my reply :
I can't come up with the exact MotherBoard type so that I could not research it over the web and give you an opinion one way or the other. But from what I could tell you just from looking at the spec's here http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/810/810e.htm . I'd swap out Motherboard/ Cpu combo to an AMD AthlonXP3200 Barton core or above . will give you the reason why here afterwards. (In Spec's) as I explain it. .
. As they revolutionize computer's into the new PCI Express format of Video cards you will need to seriously upgrade as it come's out . Or get a rock solid platform that you can use for internet gaming right from the start. (this is for people like me whom have not a lot of money but like a "hot" system that they won't need to constantly upgrade ) .Now , that being said. With it's 400 MHZ frontside bus for it's DDR memory this board run's the DOOM 3 game engine with no lag. The SATA RAID allow's for lightening fast data transfer times. The N-Force Platform provides the push needed for exceptional frame rates.(perfect for internet gaming) http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=17462883/

A 400MHZ Northbridge means smooth compatability between proccessor and busses. Making this an Ideal board for a quality low maintenance system. With only one stick of 512 400mhz being needed to start out with, I reccomend 1 Gig of 400mhz . (again note the 400mhz compatability.)
My recommended Processor for the board is an AMD AthlonXP2800 with a 400Hhz front-side bus . http://www.pricewatch.com/cpu/athlon_xp_3200.htm
And an upgrade to a AMD/ Pentuim4 compatable power supply (make sure it will fit into your case first or you will have to buy a cheap case also.) Next you will need a good video card. A PNY GEFORCE FX5200 AGP 256MB *New/Retail Box* - PNY Geforce 5200 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4x 8x VGA. - VGA +S-Video Outputs. - 3 Years Warranty - MPN: VCGFX522APB . will give you more than enough video power to run whatever it is you would like to run . See the board here http://www.pricewatch.com/video_cards/geforce_fx_5200_256mb.htm
Total cost of system :
Motherboard - $ 79.00 found here -http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=17462883/
AMD CPU - $ 185.00 found here - http://www.pricewatch.com/cpu/athlon_xp_3200.htm
Memory - 2x $40.00 found here - http://www.pricewatch.com/memory/pc2-3200_ddr2-400_512mb.htm
Power Supply - $19.99 found here - http://www.pricewatch.com/power_supply_for_case/650w.htm
Your hard drive should suffice to start you down the road to an enjoyable PC . Although I'd check to see if it's SATA compatable and if not then when fund's become available you may think about that at the time.Your case should be ATX compatable but if it's not and it's firmware then you can allway's pick up a decent ATX case for around $40 graduateing up to the rediculously expensive. But if your like me , you'd just buy a cheaper one that is decently big enough so I know the board will fit into it. And change out the factory power supply that comes with it. (Function over fancy).
Total cost of upgrade : $363.99 *note this is 2x 40 for 2 stick's memory*
*Note* Now-a-day's with e-bay and other on-line outlet's and sources you may be able to accomplish this for even cheaper still looking for this type of motherboard/cpu combo as a set rather than seperately . As long as the spec's are all 400Mhz compatable you will not be lagging in the field anytime soon ^_^ . And now ,Other's who read this post will have something more or less to disscuss and / or Debate , On their varried view's of the Athlon -Intel dellima. Hope's this help's .
In today's market of bigger and better. And bigger and better. It bug's me no end to see people who can't afford huge upgrade price's all the time . Get shafted because they don't know what's out there and available .As well as what would make a good-Long term PC that they will be happy with for a long time to come at today's price's. ( It's a retail world people )
