Filing taxes is slightly less fun than having a root canal performed with a butter knife, but TaxCut Basic does what it can to minimize the trauma and quicken the procedure.
The clean tab-based design, big text, and helpful advice column on the right all contribute to making the program usable and useful. A permanent feature that updates as you input new information into the app, the peace of mind that the Help section provides is bettered only by the concise advice it gives.
The app isn't merely a calmative; it comes with some serious muscle. It can import old TaxCut files, as well as returns from other tax-filing programs and financial database organizers. The Federal Returns tab has sections for everything from Dependents and Income to Credits and Deduction. It also organizes purchasing, and helps you fill out the appropriate state filing forms. The upper-right corner of the main window keeps a running tally of your federal and state refund, and there's also a planning tab to help you anticipate next year's taxes and invest for your future.
TaxCut Basic will even help you file a tax deadline extension, but why you would want to with this accommodating app is anybody's guess.
