Before I start my rant about keyboard controlled games I'd like to mention that I'm in the middle of playing "Scarface - The World Is Yours" and I gotta say the game is badass. There are a lot of games that I've played demos of lately which are NOT badass but this one ranks in my Top 10.
Remember how Tony Montana gets shot in the back at the end? Well in the game you start out with the "Say hello to my little friend" line and then - if you've seen the movie - you know to turn around and blast that bad guy who ended the movie right in the face. That's how the game begins. Blood shooting out from his neck as the guy falls down...that's how many of the enemies of Tony Montana meet their demise. It's the bloodiest game I've ever played (by far) and Tony is especially deadly and invincible one you have successfully entered him into "blind rage" mode. Fueled by copious amounts of cocaine and unlimited ammo you are awarded points (called "balls", naturally) every time you fire a kidney shot or a head shot. It's insane.
Now for the verdict on PC games as I see it now 5 months into my purchasing frenzy. There are entirely too many sweet-looking games which are keyboard-controlled only. That includes "Reservoir Dogs" and that really chaps my ass. I can name at least fifteen other hi-end games that I won't be buying for my new PC because they don't allow for joystick control. What a bunch of crap! I'm pleased to report that "Scarface" plays with a joystick.
Why would one even buy a cool-looking game like "Hitman: Blood Money" for their PC if they had to use the clunky keyboard controls to navigate and shoot? What were the developers thinking? That goes for "Unreal Tournament" and a game called "F.E.A.R." as well - first-person shooters that rely exclusively on keyboard controls. And these game titles I mention are but a few of the new releases that require boatloads of memory and NVidea's latest graphics card...and are keyboard-controlled only! What a terrible waste.
I guess I am accustomed to console gaming which , of course, relies exclusively on joystick control. But these badass titles for the PC that I mention have absolutely no option for gamepad control. None, not any option whatsoever. Granted - I only spent $25 USD for my game controller but there are so many games I want to play and can't (or won't). I don't think I will ever get accustomed to using the "w", "a", "s" and "z" keys to move around and the space bar to shoot. Even when I was playing Castle Wolfenstien back in the 80's there was an option for joystick control...and that was on an Apple II. Back in the day - and they knew enough to have that joystick option.
OK, I'm done with what would appear on the surface to be a rant about a trivial thing. But if you're in to gaming you might feel the same way. Or you might think I should start getting used to keyboard controls like everyone else...:ftw:
