Before I start my rant about keyboard controlled games I'd like to mention that I'm in the middle of playing "Scarface - The World Is Yours" and I gotta say the game is badass. There are a lot of games that I've played demos of lately which are NOT badass but this one ranks in my Top 10.

Remember how Tony Montana gets shot in the back at the end? Well in the game you start out with the "Say hello to my little friend" line and then - if you've seen the movie - you know to turn around and blast that bad guy who ended the movie right in the face. That's how the game begins. Blood shooting out from his neck as the guy falls down...that's how many of the enemies of Tony Montana meet their demise. It's the bloodiest game I've ever played (by far) and Tony is especially deadly and invincible one you have successfully entered him into "blind rage" mode. Fueled by copious amounts of cocaine and unlimited ammo you are awarded points (called "balls", naturally) every time you fire a kidney shot or a head shot. It's insane.

Now for the verdict on PC games as I see it now 5 months into my purchasing frenzy. There are entirely too many sweet-looking games which are keyboard-controlled only. That includes "Reservoir Dogs" and that really chaps my ass. I can name at least fifteen other hi-end games that I won't be buying for my new PC because they don't allow for joystick control. What a bunch of crap! I'm pleased to report that "Scarface" plays with a joystick.

Why would one even buy a cool-looking game like "Hitman: Blood Money" for their PC if they had to use the clunky keyboard controls to navigate and shoot? What were the developers thinking? That goes for "Unreal Tournament" and a game called "F.E.A.R." as well - first-person shooters that rely exclusively on keyboard controls. And these game titles I mention are but a few of the new releases that require boatloads of memory and NVidea's latest graphics card...and are keyboard-controlled only! What a terrible waste.

I guess I am accustomed to console gaming which , of course, relies exclusively on joystick control. But these badass titles for the PC that I mention have absolutely no option for gamepad control. None, not any option whatsoever. Granted - I only spent $25 USD for my game controller but there are so many games I want to play and can't (or won't). I don't think I will ever get accustomed to using the "w", "a", "s" and "z" keys to move around and the space bar to shoot. Even when I was playing Castle Wolfenstien back in the 80's there was an option for joystick control...and that was on an Apple II. Back in the day - and they knew enough to have that joystick option.

OK, I'm done with what would appear on the surface to be a rant about a trivial thing. But if you're in to gaming you might feel the same way. Or you might think I should start getting used to keyboard controls like everyone else...:ftw:

Have to disagree with you man, been a PC gamer all my life and have NEVER used a joystick on a PC, thats what consoles are for. I play lots of FPS and RPG games and I am a reasonably good player. I love my keyboard anbd mouse combo, I mean where can you bind all yer wallhacks and aimbots on a joystick :P I have a laser mouse with 8 buttons on it and have loads bound to those keys depending on game

agree with jod.... FPS and RPG I cant do them without key/mouse combo...thats why my son can whip me on games like Halo.... I have no chance with those damn game pads :(

i've used both since my gaming days began and at first i did find the transition from joypad to keys a little hard to get used to, but once u get use to it, it just becomes 2nd nature...

Keyboard all the way. Joysticks and controller pads don't have the buttons to do everything you cacn on a keyboard.

I'm gonna be a convert soon, that's for sure.

Too many dynamite games out there that are keyboard-only.

We are all assuming that you mean keyboard AND mouse... Tell me you aren't trying to aim FPS with the keypad or something!!!!

Yup, I've got a decent mouse...but I think I'll need a gaming mouse for the impending switchover...

i've got an old HP mouse from '98. as long as i clean the cat hair and dirt off the wheels it works great. both buttons have permanent finger grooves from use. i've got newer optical mice but for gaming i like to switch to the old HP.

i also only shoot black powder pistols if that tells you anything.

I am in the process of "buying" Madden 07 and Tiger Woods 07. I think since I got used to these games on a console that I would enjoy them more with a game pad. Which one would you suggest? If you think I should go another route, which one? Thanks as I know this is a highly opinionated crowd.

moonman, I've got both of those games and both are, of course, made by EA Games. That means they are best suited for a $25 USD Logitech game controller which you can pick up just about anywhere. They are advertised as such by EA Games right on the game controller box!

Ironically it's Tiger Woods '07 that is best played with a mouse. You get the most accurate swing that way. But it too is advertised on the Logitech game controller box as compatible. The best games I have tried thus far with my Logitech game controller are the EA titles FIFA World Cup '06 (terriffic game even if you don't know much about soccer) as well as NBA Live '07 and Madden. Halo 2, GTR-2, Moto GP3, Guilty Gear XX, Scarface, Lego Star Wars and Kill Switch are also great games that utilize the game controller features best.

But that still doesn't mean that I won't be alternating to keyboard controls sometime in the near future. As I said before - there are too many other good games out there that are keyboard only. Logitech also makes an optical "gaming mouse" with a teflon-coated underside that I may pick up for X-mas along with a more ergonomic keyboard. But if you are looking for a good, inexpensive game controller that is compatible with the titles you mentioned than the Logitech game controller is the cheapest, best way to go.

gamepad = good for racing, sports, fighting, old school rpg (ie final fantasy)
mouse and keyboard = good for fps (no way you can aim as good with controller, anolog or no), mmorpg, rts, flight sim (ok, replace mouse with flight stick, then we're talking), and I still prefer mouse/keyboard for games like gta, hitman. I rarely need as much control with walking/driving as I do with looking/shooting.
ps...haven't read whole post, just posting cause the drink is telling me too, what...ya wanna fight about it?

I prefer the speed (and seemingly more detailed control) of keyboard controls. But I still kick ass at Halo/Halo2, Timesplitters and Syphon Filter.

I felt the same way Njohn did, but then i played F.E.A.R and Far Cry and it totally changed my mind about computer gaming. Thats pretty much all i buy now. Most good games are worth the frustration, but you soon get good with the controls.

I am now pleased to report that I have successfully converted to the keyboard control game configuration. Whoopee!

I can now effectively play the four games I'm currently engaged in: Call of Duty 2, Rogue Trooper, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Rainbow Six Vegas. I had all of these games when I originally wrote this post in November '06 but could not play them.

Incidentally it was Rainbow Six Vegas that broke me in. That game is insane.

Game on!
