Dell screws

OK, pardon me while I rant a moment.

First of all, yes - three weeks ago I bought a Dell. Hardy-har-har, a Dell. But it's an XPS 410 and it works great except for one problem. A vibration, an internal sympathetic vibatration which is noisy and unsettling to say the least. It's loud.

I just got off the phone with Dell tech support and apparently this vibration problem with my 410 is nothing new to them. They've been getting calls from all over the United States about it. It turns out that there is a problem with the lower of the two drive bays that makes the DVD-ROM drive loose in a way that cannot be easily fixed. For all XPS 410 models.

Now they won't take the computer back (and I would hate to go through the trouble anyway) but apparently I'll have to go through at least some more trouble until this thing is fixed. Dell is now sending me their "fix" for the problem: new screws. Yes, screws for the drive that I will have to pop out completely and do surgery on while on the phone with their live tech support. The screws are shipping out from Texas today and due to arrive here in Michigan on Friday.

So did I get screwed? Well let's hope not. Apparently this problem will get worse over time if not corrected. The drive will vibrate further and further out of it's housing due to the internal fan's natural vibration. Apparently that's what happened to the 410 owners that waited months to report this problem - not in a matter of days like me. And I take no pleasure in the fact that I will now have to do live drive surgery with Dell on the phone guiding me through it. On a 3-week old PC! And if I returned it to them there is a high degree of probablity that the replacement unit would have the same problem as this one.

So, did I get screwed? Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!:ftw:

Can you take it outof the holder and screw it straight into the case? That would get rid of the hole problem all together

I'll try screwing it straight into the case if the new Dell fix does not fix the problem. Thanks for the tip, Pile!

if they won't give a replacement, dell has a 21 day no question return policy, if they say you can't get your money back, talk to a manager.

and the people in india are told to give a "normal" name, so you don't have to break your tongue trying to pronounce lkhpohhack;lkh

No doubt. That's my next move if the "screws" don't work.

Thx.
