I got a phone call tonight about a job. I need to take the tests online and meet with these folks on Monday to interview. I totally BOMBED my last interview a few weeks ago. Can any of you folks give me some advice? My problem is I blank out and then FREAK out when they are talking to me. I know how to do the job...I am qualified to do the job...I just need to pass this stoopid interview process. The simple thought of it makes me wanna puke...

You should have a good idea of the topics you will talk about. Just think about them before hand and have an idea of what your responses will be. Relax. The person you are being interviewed by is just like you. Be yourself and be confident. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

good luck ....will start my 6 round interview for a consultant position in the coming weeks......(have to do it without the fookers where I work finding out too !)..... never had probs with interviews (except the technical ones ) but simple tips are available all over the intarweb

such as...

http://www.pohly.com/interview.shtml etc etc...just do a google search

Simply put

- prepare urself by learning about the company and more about the job description and if necessary practise answering/talking in front of a mirror to see how u look/act...

- be confident
- don't be too eager, just relax...the more relaxed u are, the better you will communicate
-......smile......
...maintain eye contact while answering......for example, if u keep looking down / up or elsewhere all the time while answering questions, most HR's will assume ur lying
- talk about how good u are at things and how ur a very fast learner......(might need to have some examples at hand to elucidate those points if they ask for it)
- don't make up stories (especially on the spot)

That should cover most personal interviews for any kinda position...

Go out in social situations and practice small talk and banter... talking to friends/strangers and holding thier attention/making them laugh is good practice.

You could always pretend the interviewer is your fustrating gambling mum and you won't be nervous anymore... just don't throttle them either. :)

My most successful interview was when I pretended it wasn't an interview....just folks talking.

thanks Rosie. I get so flustered that I get all hot faced and sweaty. The last one I had, I fogged up my glasses...how embarrassing!

Satman, I have researched those sites, and I know what I am supposed to do. I just need to IMPLEMENT it!!!

Dont try to hard.
Dont be cocky.
Dont stress the little stuff.

My theory is that if there making you take a test, together with your resume and references they already know if they want you or not. This makes the job of the interviewer simple, to find if you have any personality traits that will not mesh with the work enviroment.

Such as are you on time, Do you have an attitude, Do you listen think then speek in that order, can you interact with people Can you show up on time and be prepaired to work.

Make sure you know were the place is ahead of time and how to get there. If they have a web site dig around thru the company propaganda stuff, mission statements, company history philosophy. Check out there product lines and or customers. Maybe print out some of the interesting stuff and take with you to the interview (not alot just one or two pages max). Take your resume and the job announcement with you to the interview. Maybe put them in a neat binder with a note book to take notes with. Write down some simple questions so when they say so do you have any questions so you dont have to think about them.

Then show up early and park down the steet. Kick back listen to the radio, read a book and chill. A several minutes before the interview go in and if they make you wait go over your resume and there job discription, and check out the office they make you wait in concentrait on your surroundings not what your there for.

Good luck

also, try talking about hr buzz words such as: can you tell me more about the company culture? what educational resources do you offer?

I always try and make the interview more about what you have to offer me than what I have to offer you. That seems to take up alot of time. Usually only one hour is alloted for an interview. If you can control 40 min of it you only have to think on your feet for the other 20. You ask one question and let them talk. Play off of what they say. If they tell you they have an easy-going organizational culture. Later, talk about how easy going you are. etc.

Has worked for me in the past.

I'm good at interviews. People LOVE talking about themselves, any chance you get twist it back round on them and let them talk. If they are trying to sell the company to you a good one is always, "Why do you work here? What attracts you to this company and why should I WANT to work for them"

Let them talk... it's the best way

I am going through a series of interviews myself, but my last job really helped me come up with a strategy for these interviews. I found the best thing to do is hop right in and act like you are in a conversation. Conversations are easier to carry than interviews. The funny thing is, they are not all that happy to be giving interviews, it get in the way of them doing thier job. So go in there and be up beat bring someting to the table. Ask them questions. I found that if you go in there, and say "what is it YOU would expect of me coming into this position?" they will open up and start talking. And as we all know people like to talk, and it takes some of the focus off of you, and gives you insight into how that person thinks, and what they expect of you.

I find it also helps if you can tell short diatribes comparing what they want you to do, with what you have done in the past. It shows them that you have expereince, and that you are thinking on your toes.

Oh yeah, smile and relax :)

If it's nerves you have then I used to try a few of the following things to calm myself down when I used to go for interviews. .

1. Just prior to going in, I'd sit down and tense my midsection and try holding it for as long as I could. I'd do this for approx 5 mins just prior to going in.
The effect this has is that you can't help but relax. Try it. You'll find that after tensing for about 30 seconds that your body's natural reaction is to relax. If you do it for long enough this relaxing technique starts to calm you down mentally as well.

2. In the interview they'll be watching your body language. So to lessen the number of clues you send to them about your nervousness, clasp your hands together (by intertwining/ interlacing/ interlocking your fingers) and let them sit naturally in your lap. If they're locked together then it will prevent you from e.g. tapping them nervously on a chair, etc.

3. (this is not as important as the two above) If you're being interviewed by a panel : I initially pick a line on the wall just above the interviewers line of sight. Then when I'm talking to them I move my head slowly from left to right around the room, giving the impression that I'm actually talking to them all. Then once you've calmed down after the first 5 - 10 mins then start looking them each in the eye (depending on who is asking the questions).

If you're being interviewed by one person then I pick a spot on their forehead between their eyes and focus on that initially until you feel more confident.

Your nerves make you forget everything. It's not until you calm them that you can start to think logically.

One last thing. Remember that if you can't communicate to them what makes you better than the others applying for the job then they it's not their fault. If you're confident that you have the goods for the job then you should feel confident (despite the nerves) that you can answer most/ if not all the questions they may ask you about your ability to handle the job. Try and feel a little competitive as well.

All the best for your interview!

just to add alittle bit:

- have a few ice-breakers funny ones are more welcomed.
- show a happy smiling face even if you dont feel happy.
- Dont go into the interview looking tired, smelly or worse with a bad breath.
- interview the interviewer.
- if asked "what is the most important thing you consider when you are working" - answer; "the boss or the manager is the most important" - interviewers love this answer.

anyways, good luck!
